Help with or someone to make a pattern

Postby terrymiller » Sun Oct 18, 2009 8:19 am

I have a picture of my grandfather that is black and white that I would like to convert to a pattern so I can saw it out. I have tried many times to make it into a pattern but it does not turn out the way I like. The area around the eyes and also the pinstriping never looks right. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated. Here is the photo

Terry,

I've just started designing patterns but not sure if I have any ideas. There are plenty of folks here that can help. If you're interested in pattern making, there are some tutorials available that are very good. Sounds like you've tried patterns before. What software do you have for making patterns? I am doing a tutorial on GIMP and hope to learn a little.

I have tried alot of the ones out there. I have paint.net, gimp, ultrapaint, and I am currently playing with the trial of Corel. So far I really like the corel and may have to purchase it. I have converted the picture above with Corel and so far so good, I still have some cleaning up to do though. I just printed the original and the pattern out and i am going to do some work the old fashioned way then scan the picture back into the computer. When I get the pattern finished I will post it for tips and to make sure I havent missed anything. As far as the tutorial have you checked Youtube. I want to say that there is a video about Gimp on there.

Yeah, I saw some tutorials on Youtube but want to finish the one from Scroll Saw Village. That GIMP tutorial is specifically for making scroll saw patterns. I've been reading up on some graphics tablets like Wacom. People that have them either love them or hate them. The overall ratings are good, but I don't know if I really will get that heavily into pattern making to justify the cost. Sure would be fun to try one out.

I had one I bought it for my wife for embroidery digitizer. I thought it was ok. The one that I had I got at I think Circuit City for about a hundred dollars. If I had to do it again i would buy the bigger tablet, then make transparencies like used on overhead projectors. Then you should be able to trace the actual photo.

Terry, did anyone ever help you with this pattern? If not I can provide you with what I have completed. I am learning PSP and portrait pattern making and thought I would try this after seeing it.
