Pattern Shading

Postby John Polhemus » Sat Oct 25, 2008 4:45 pm

Do you like patterns shaded or not?
Do you like the area to be cut away shaded or the area that stays?
Dark shading or light?

Thanks!

Hey John,

Good questions. Shading is OK as long as it is very light. I usually assume the shaded areas get cut out. I hope I'm never wrong on this. I guess I'd find out pretty quick. I usually just follow the lines so shading isn't real important to me.

Hi John, I personally prefer not to have any shading. I just follow the lines like Dan and I find if there is dark shading it just distracts me. Ray

I should have mentioned I was curious regarding the patterns I sell from my website. Personally, I prefer a very light shading.

If you wouldn't mind, would you go to my site http://www.jpwoodworks.net print the sample and let me know what you think?

Thanks, JP

Hi John,
I think, for newcomer it is easer to get an pattern how was shaded. And when, than so, that the stays area are shaded. But that is a matter of taste.
It is right what Dan write. It is easer to find the cutting areas.

Have a nice day

John, After printing the sample it looks like it would be easier to cut with the shading. I think it would be easier to see in the very "busy" areas. I don't usually cut too many patterns with shading but a light shading would not be too distracting. Just my opinion. Ray

I agree with Ray. I printed the pattern and it's easy to see that the shaded area stays. I will do a little cutting tomorrow and see what how it works. I do like the thin lines. I've cut patterns with thicker lines and it's harder to keep straight lines straight, at least for me.

Clear, thin lines and very light shading is an excellent way to help tired old eyes when cutting, John.

If I obtain a pattern without shading, I scan it in and shade it myself.

After putting the pattern to the saw, I found the shading does not effect the way I cut. The shading is light enough to contrast the dark lines so I can follow them quite well. So, you get two thumbs up from me for shading the patterns.

Thanks Dan, that's the same for me when cutting patterns shaded as I shade them, guess that will be my standard.

I prefer shaded patterns, and the folks who use my patterns tend to want them shaded with a thin line, and light color, so that it is easier to see the blade.
