JAGUAR CATCHING SOME RAYS

This Jaguar was cut from a special slab of black walnut given to me by a friend. The wood was 24" x 12" x 1". This pattern was designed by Sue Mey.

Hello Carol and Homer: Thanks and double thanks for your kind comments. Typically, I study the grain patterns and color variations on a hardwood board before I decide what I am going to do for my project. As soon as I saw this beautiful piece of black walnut, I immediately thought of a cat sunning himself. Of course, one of my favorite subjects for these wildlife pieces is the big wildcats. Hence, the jaguar was selected after I heard what the board was saying!

I agree about the wood talking to you. I have several pieces that have jumped out and screamed that they were meant to be made into birds. I have been thinking about trying your fret-carving type of projects I just need to find the time.

Thank You for the kind words, Doug. The coloring of the jaguar's coat is unique in this project. It is finely powdered metallic gold dust, similar to gold leaf, in a light suspension of urethane varnish applied in multiple very thin layers. Using this technique, I was able to achieve a mottled effect of the coat and control the light reflections as desired.
